New Delhi, Aug 8 : Delhi could see some relief from its persistent parking crunch, with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) planning to add 45 new authorised parking sites across the Central, South, Karol Bagh and West zones next month.
According to civic officials, tenders for the proposed parking facilities are likely to be issued next month. The initiative is aimed at creating more organised parking spaces and reducing traffic congestion caused by vehicles being parked along roadsides.
The proposed expansion comes as parking demand continues to rise across several parts of the national capital, particularly in busy commercial and residential areas where limited parking space frequently contributes to traffic bottlenecks.
Parking capacity to cross 95,000 vehicles
The MCD currently operates around 450 authorised parking sites across Delhi, providing parking space for approximately 90,000 vehicles, including cars, two-wheelers, buses and trucks.
With the proposed 45 additional sites, the number of municipal parking facilities could move closer to 500, while overall parking capacity is expected to increase to nearly 95,000 vehicles.
Officials said the exact locations and individual capacities of the new sites are still being finalised.
Focus on high-demand areas
The civic body is identifying locations where parking demand is particularly high. The expansion is expected to provide commuters and residents with designated alternatives to roadside parking.
Earlier, the MCD had shortlisted 38 new parking sites with a combined capacity of more than 6,100 vehicles. The civic agency has continued surveying additional locations as part of its effort to expand the authorised parking network.
The proposed facilities are also expected to help improve traffic movement in congested areas by reducing the number of vehicles occupying road space.
However, the effectiveness of the expansion will depend on the final locations, parking capacity and how efficiently the facilities are implemented and managed.
