Patna, Aug. 6: Indian Railways has undertaken new railway line projects covering a total length of 764 kilometres to improve connectivity in Bihar’s Seemanchal region, with the objective of enhancing passenger travel, increasing freight movement and supporting regional economic growth.

The proposed rail infrastructure will strengthen links between the districts of Seemanchal, neighbouring West Bengal and the North-Eastern states, improving transportation across a strategically important corridor in eastern India. In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the projects are part of the government’s efforts to expand rail connectivity in the region.

The information was shared in response to questions regarding plans to improve railway infrastructure connecting Bihar’s north-eastern districts with eastern and north-eastern India. The minister also highlighted the importance of Katihar Junction, one of the busiest railway stations in the region, which currently handles a large volume of passenger and freight traffic each day.

To support these operations, the station is equipped with multiple railway lines, platforms and maintenance facilities.Katihar Junction has been selected for redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, aimed at modernising railway stations by upgrading passenger amenities and operational infrastructure.

Existing facilities at the station include high-level platforms, waiting halls, platform shelters, foot overbridges, lifts, escalators, drinking water facilities, seating arrangements and improved accessibility features.Railway officials said several improvement works have already been completed, including additional platform shelters, upgraded facilities for persons with disabilities and the conversion of the Manihari Terminal platform to a high-level platform.

The planned rail expansion is expected to improve regional connectivity, reduce travel time, facilitate the movement of goods and promote economic activity across the Seemanchal region.

Officials believe the projects will also strengthen transport links between Bihar and the North-Eastern states, benefiting passengers, businesses and the agriculture sector. The railway ministry said infrastructure development in the region remains a priority as part of its broader efforts to expand the national rail network and improve transportation services across the country.
