Colombo, Aug 5: Former Sri Lankan parliamentarian Eran Wickramaratne has been appointed chairman of a newly formed Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Transformation Committee following a major change in the country’s cricket administration.
The nine-member committee includes former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara and former international cricketer Roshan Mahanama. The panel is expected to oversee the transition and work on reforms aimed at strengthening the administration and long-term development of cricket in the country.
The restructuring follows the resignation of SLC President Shammi Silva and members of the organisation’s Executive Committee. Their resignations were accepted by Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage, paving the way for the formation of the new committee.According to the Sports Ministry, Sri Lanka Cricket will remain under interim government supervision under provisions of the country’s Sports Law No. 25 of 1973.
The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports will oversee the administration during the transition period.The Transformation Committee is expected to examine key areas, including governance, transparency, financial management, cricket development and the future administrative structure of Sri Lanka Cricket.
The inclusion of Sangakkara and Mahanama is expected to provide the committee with significant experience from international cricket. Their involvement may also help connect administrative reforms with the needs of players and the broader cricketing system.
The committee is likely to play an important role in shaping a new governance framework for Sri Lanka Cricket before a permanent administrative structure is established.
The development marks a significant shift in the management of Sri Lankan cricket, with the government taking an interim oversight role while the newly appointed panel works on reforms and organisational restructuring.
