NEW DELHI, Aug. 3: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall alert for 19 states and Union Territories on Tuesday, August 4, as the southwest monsoon remains active across large parts of the country, with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds likely in several regions.
According to the IMD, states under the heavy rainfall warning include Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, coastal Karnataka and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, among others.
The weather office has placed Delhi-NCR under a Yellow Alert, forecasting light to moderate rainfall, cloudy skies and pleasant daytime temperatures. The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 32 degrees Celsius, while the minimum is likely to remain near 24 degrees Celsius.
In Uttar Pradesh, widespread rainfall is forecast in eastern districts until August 8 and in western parts of the state until August 7. Heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places across both regions on August 4.
Bihar is expected to witness widespread rainfall until August 5, with heavy showers forecast in several districts on Tuesday. The IMD has also warned of thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kmph.
Jharkhand has been placed under a Yellow Alert for the next four days, till August 6. The Meteorological Department has forecast thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds of 40 to 50 kmph, along with light to moderate rainfall and heavy showers in several districts.
Heavy rainfall is likely in Garhwa, Palamu, Chatra, Latehar, Hazaribagh, Koderma, Ramgarh, Bokaro, Deoghar, Jamtara, Dumka, Pakur, Godda, Sahibganj, West Singhbhum, East Singhbhum and Saraikela-Kharsawan districts.
In Rajasthan, rainfall activity is expected to ease slightly over Jodhpur, Udaipur and Kota divisions as the prevailing low-pressure system shifts northward. However, light to moderate rainfall is likely to continue in Bikaner, Shekhawati, Jaipur and Bharatpur divisions until August 5.
The IMD has also forecast extremely heavy rainfall over Assam, Meghalaya, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, while flood-like conditions continue to affect parts of Kerala and Assam following persistent monsoon showers.
“Heavy rainfall is likely over 19 states and Union Territories on August 4,” the IMD said.
The weather agency further stated that “thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds are likely in several parts of Bihar and Jharkhand,” adding that “a Yellow Alert has been issued for several districts of Jharkhand till August 6.”
The IMD also warned that “extremely heavy rainfall is expected over Assam, Meghalaya, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim,” advising residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert and follow advisories issued by local authorities.
Authorities are expected to closely monitor the evolving weather situation, particularly in flood-prone and low-lying areas, as the active monsoon conditions are likely to persist over the coming days.
