New Delhi, July 29 : Delhi Police on Tuesday rejected allegations that security personnel opened fire on protesters during the student demonstration at Jantar Mantar on July 20, stating that a medical examination of the injured protester found no evidence of a bullet injury.
The clarification comes amid a political row over the police action during the student protest, with Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi questioning the government’s handling of the demonstration and alleging excessive use of force against students protesting over alleged examination irregularities. The issue has also triggered widespread debate over reports claiming that pellet guns were used during the protest.
In an official fact-check issued through its social media platforms, Delhi Police said claims circulating online that a protester had sustained a bullet injury during the July 20 protest were not supported by medical evidence.
According to the police, the Medico-Legal Case (MLC) report of the injured individual recorded a lacerated wound near the right tragus—the front portion of the ear—which doctors concluded was caused by a sharp-edged object and not by a firearm.
The police said the injury had been classified as “simple” in nature and that the MLC report contained no indication of a bullet wound or any firearm-related injury.
“The claim being circulated on social media that a protester suffered a bullet injury during the July 20 demonstration has not been substantiated. The MLC report does not support such claims,” Delhi Police said.
The police further appealed to citizens to exercise caution while sharing information on social media and urged people to verify facts through official and authentic sources before believing or forwarding such claims.
The clarification follows intense political exchanges over the police response to the student protest held at Jantar Mantar, where demonstrators had gathered to demand action over alleged irregularities in national entrance examinations. The protest witnessed heavy deployment of security personnel and sparked criticism from opposition leaders, who accused the authorities of using excessive force against peaceful protesters.
Delhi Police, however, has maintained that law and order was managed in accordance with established procedures and reiterated that there is no medical evidence to support allegations of firing on protesters.
The controversy over the July 20 protest continues to resonate politically, with opposition parties demanding greater accountability over the handling of student demonstrations, while the police insist that misinformation surrounding the incident should not be spread without factual verification.
