Patna, July 29: The Bihar State Transgender Welfare Board has approved a proposal to construct a temple dedicated to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with members of the board saying the initiative recognises his contribution towards securing “respect and rights” for the transgender community.
The proposal was approved during the maiden meeting of the Bihar State Transgender Welfare Board, which functions under the state’s Social Welfare Department. The proposal was moved by board member Ranjan Singh and received unanimous support from the members present.
Speaking after the meeting, Singh said the idea behind the proposal was to acknowledge the Prime Minister’s role in empowering the transgender community.
“Since the transgender community in Bihar does not have a temple of its own, I proposed to build a temple for Narendra Modi because he gave us respect and rights,” Singh said.
He added that the proposal was unanimously endorsed by the board.
“The proposal received the support of all members and was approved by the board,” he said.
The Bihar government constituted the Bihar State Transgender Welfare Board in August last year to safeguard the rights of transgender persons and promote their social development and empowerment.
According to Singh, the meeting marked the board’s first official gathering following the implementation of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, which provided institutional representation to the transgender community within the state secretariat.
“Today’s meeting marked the first gathering of the Bihar State Transgender Welfare Board following the enactment of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, which provided the transgender community with institutional representation in the state secretariat,” Singh said.
The proposal to construct the temple was approved by the board, while further details regarding the project’s location, timeline and implementation are yet to be announced.
