Washington, July 22: The United States has issued a fresh warning to Iran, stating that any attack on ships passing through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz would invite a swift military response targeting key Iranian infrastructure.
US President Donald Trump said that any missile, rocket, drone or other weapon used by Iran against vessels in the waterway would be met with retaliatory strikes on selected infrastructure, including bridges and power plants.
The statement was made through a post on his social media platform, amid heightened tensions in the region.The warning comes as military activity between the United States and Iran continues to intensify across West Asia.
Reports of missile launches and defensive operations have emerged from several locations, raising concerns over regional stability and the safety of international shipping.
Air defence sirens were activated in Jordan’s port city of Aqaba following reported missile activity.
Jordanian authorities said several incoming missiles were intercepted, while others landed in uninhabited areas without causing major damage.
Meanwhile, Iranian media reported that a US missile strike targeted Larak Island, located near the Strait of Hormuz. Residents reportedly heard a powerful explosion, although there was no immediate official confirmation regarding casualties or the extent of the damage.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most vital maritime routes, carrying a significant share of global oil and liquefied natural gas exports.
Any disruption in the area could affect international energy supplies, global trade and oil prices.
