WASHINGTON, July 22 : US President Donald Trump has announced a 50% tariff on a broad range of Canadian imports, citing what he described as unfair treatment of American automobiles, dairy products and alcohol. The new duties are set to take effect in 30 days, marking a significant escalation in trade tensions between the two North American neighbours.
The tariffs will cover a variety of consumer and industrial products, including wine, hockey sticks and cement. However, several key Canadian exports such as energy, potash, critical minerals and fish have been exempted. The White House said the move is aimed at protecting American industries, boosting domestic manufacturing and addressing what it considers long-standing trade imbalances.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he had spoken with Trump following the announcement and that both leaders had agreed to intensify trade negotiations in the coming weeks. Carney said Canada remains committed to dialogue but stressed that all options remain under consideration if the proposed tariffs are implemented.
The latest action adds to existing US tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminium, copper, softwood lumber and certain automobile components. Canada, in turn, continues to impose counter-tariffs on selected American products. Ottawa has argued that the latest US measures violate the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), the free trade pact negotiated during Trump’s first presidential term.
The Trump administration has defended the tariff policy, saying it is necessary to strengthen domestic production, create jobs and ensure fair competition for American businesses. However, economists and trade experts have warned that higher import duties could increase costs for manufacturers, disrupt supply chains and ultimately push up prices for consumers in both countries.
The latest announcement has also fuelled speculation that Washington may introduce additional tariffs on imports from other trading partners in the coming weeks. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer indicated that further trade actions could be announced soon as the administration continues to pursue its broader economic agenda.
Analysts say the dispute adds fresh uncertainty to North America’s integrated manufacturing sector, particularly the automotive industry, where production relies heavily on cross-border supply chains. Businesses on both sides of the border are expected to closely monitor the negotiations before the tariffs come into effect, while officials continue efforts to prevent a further deterioration in bilateral trade relations.
