Ranchi, July 14: Ranchi Sadar Hospital has scripted a new chapter in Jharkhand’s public healthcare system by successfully performing the state’s first thoracic decortication surgery in a government hospital, marking a major milestone in the delivery of advanced and high-risk medical care.
The complex surgery was carried out on a critically ill patient from Dhanbad who had been suffering from chronic empyema, a severe condition in which thick pus and clots accumulate around the lungs, leading to serious breathing difficulties.
According to hospital authorities, the patient had earlier approached several private hospitals in Ranchi, but surgery was reportedly declined because of pre-existing cardiac comorbidities. The medical team at Ranchi Sadar Hospital accepted the challenge and successfully performed the high-risk procedure, significantly improving the patient’s condition.
Doctors also conducted diagnostic thoracoscopy and bronchoscopy during the operation, which was declared a complete success.
In a significant relief to the patient, the entire treatment and surgery were provided free of cost. Hospital officials said the procedure generally costs between ₹6 lakh and ₹8 lakh in private hospitals, highlighting the growing capability of government healthcare institutions to offer advanced medical services without financial burden on patients.
The surgery was led by Onco-surgeon Dr. Abhinav, with support from Dr. Akhilesh (Surgeon), Dr. Souvik (Pulmonologist), Dr. Deepak, Dr. Anchal, and Dr. Vikas (Anaesthesiologist). Hospital authorities credited the coordinated efforts of the multidisciplinary team for the successful outcome.
The hospital management also acknowledged the guidance of Deputy Superintendent Dr. Bimalesh and Chief Medical Officer/Civil Surgeon Dr. Prabhat, stating that their support played a key role in achieving the landmark feat.
“This achievement was made possible through excellent teamwork and modern medical facilities,” the hospital management said.
It further added, “The guidance and support of Deputy Superintendent Dr. Bimalesh and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Prabhat played a crucial role in the success of the surgery.”
Describing the operation as a watershed moment for the state’s public health system, hospital authorities said, “This successful thoracic decortication surgery, the first performed in a government hospital in Jharkhand, marks a significant milestone for the state’s healthcare system.”
They added that the accomplishment demonstrates that government hospitals in Jharkhand are now capable of performing complex and high-risk surgeries while providing advanced treatment free of cost, paving the way for critically ill patients to access specialised healthcare within the state.
