Ranchi, July 10: A newly released sports book brings together the inspiring stories of 15 Indian athletes who overcame financial hardship, personal setbacks and intense competition to achieve success on the national and international stage.
Titled HEROES – The Changemakers of Indian Sports, the book traces the journeys of athletes from diverse disciplines, including boxing, wrestling, badminton, sailing, equestrian, taekwondo and speed skating.
It aims to introduce readers, particularly young audiences, to the determination and resilience behind India’s sporting achievements beyond cricket.
Among the featured stories is that of world champion boxer Nikhat Zareen, whose early career included a high-profile selection trial against veteran boxer MC Mary Kom ahead of the Tokyo Olympic qualification process.
Although Zareen did not succeed in that challenge, the setback became a defining moment in her career, motivating her to return stronger and establish herself among India’s leading boxers.
The book also explores the struggles faced by several athletes during their formative years. Some trained without proper equipment due to financial constraints, while others overcame family hardships and life-changing setbacks before reaching the highest level of competition.
It also explains lesser-known aspects of competitive sport, including the demanding weight-management practices followed by wrestlers before major tournaments, offering readers a glimpse into the physical and mental challenges athletes endure.
Based largely on interviews with the featured sportspersons, the book presents first-hand accounts of their experiences, training and personal sacrifices.
These narratives provide readers with a deeper understanding of the commitment required to succeed in elite sport.
In addition to individual profiles, each chapter includes background information on the featured sport, its history, growth in India and notable international achievements, making the book both informative and engaging.
While the publication is designed primarily for younger readers, its focus on perseverance, discipline and determination makes it relevant for sports enthusiasts of all ages.
By highlighting athletes from lesser-known disciplines, the book seeks to broaden public appreciation of India’s sporting landscape and inspire the next generation of champions.
