Ranchi, July 8: The Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) has launched a drive against the commercial use of residential buildings in Harmu Housing Colony, issuing notices to property owners and warning of sealing and legal action against violators.
The Municipal Registration Branch has begun inspections to identify residential properties being used for commercial activities in violation of municipal by-laws. Owners found flouting the rules have been directed to discontinue commercial operations and submit a compliance report within seven days.
The notices warn that failure to comply with the directions will result in the sealing of shops and commercial establishments operating from the premises, besides legal action against the building owners.
According to the municipal administration, commercial activities in residential buildings are prohibited under the municipal by-laws, prompting the ongoing enforcement drive in the colony.
Earlier this year, the Jharkhand Housing Board had also issued a notice to former India cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni over the alleged commercial use of his residential plot in Harmu.
The notice, issued on February 27, 2026, alleged that a pathology laboratory was operating from the plot, which had been allotted exclusively for residential purposes. The Housing Board sought Dhoni’s explanation over the alleged violation, stating that failure to respond could lead to a recommendation for cancellation of the allotment of Plot No. H10A.
The civic action forms part of a broader effort by authorities to enforce land-use regulations and curb the unauthorised commercial use of residential properties in the city.
