Dhanbad, Mar 27 : IIT (ISM) Dhanbad on Friday inaugurated a two-day national workshop exploring the growing role of mathematics in healthcare, bringing together academicians and researchers to discuss how mathematical tools can aid medical science.

Titled “From Equations to Life: Mathematical Insights into Human Health”, the workshop is being organised by the Department of Mathematics & Computing at the institute’s seminar hall from March 27 to 28.

Addressing the inaugural session, Director Sukumar Mishra stressed the importance of interdisciplinary approaches in tackling modern healthcare challenges. “Interdisciplinary efforts are the need of the hour in addressing complex healthcare challenges,” he said.

Head of the department S P Tiwari highlighted the increasing role of Artificial Intelligence in healthcare research, while convenor R K Upadhyay underlined the practical applications of mathematical equations in understanding human health. “Mathematical equations have wide real-life applications, particularly in understanding human health,” he said.

The workshop focuses on key areas such as mathematical modelling in medicine, medical imaging, Bayesian modelling, Parkinson’s disease modelling and cardiac motion analysis, reflecting the expanding interface between mathematics and healthcare.

Experts from leading institutions, including IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur and Visva Bharati University, are delivering lectures and participating in interactive sessions.

Organised under the Scientific Social Responsibility (SSR) initiative of the Anusandhan National Research Foundation in collaboration with the National Academy of Sciences India, the programme is aimed at selected teachers from across Jharkhand.

The event features expert talks, simulation-based discussions, campus visits and interactive sessions to promote interdisciplinary research. More than 25 participants are attending the workshop offline, while over 60 have joined online, reflecting strong academic interest in the subject.

“Artificial Intelligence is playing an increasing role in healthcare research,” Prof Tiwari noted, emphasising the need to integrate emerging technologies with traditional mathematical approaches.

The workshop will conclude on March 28.
