Seraikela-Kharswan (Jharkhand), Mar 24: A four-year-old girl was allegedly strangled to death by her mother in Seraikela-Kharswan district, police said on Tuesday, adding that the accused had initially tried to mislead investigators by claiming the child was abducted.
The woman was arrested on Monday and remanded to judicial custody following a complaint lodged by the victim’s father, officials from Chandil police station said.
“A four-year-old girl was allegedly strangled to death by her mother,” said Dilson Birua, officer-in-charge of the police station.
According to police, the accused allegedly killed her daughter and later fabricated a story of abduction, which triggered tension in the locality and prompted a search operation.
“The woman allegedly killed her daughter and then tried to mislead the investigators by claiming that she had been abducted,” the officer said.
During the probe, investigators grew suspicious of the mother’s claims. The child’s body was subsequently recovered from behind the family’s house.
“The child’s body was later recovered from behind the family’s house,” police said.
Officials said the woman fled the area after the body was found but was later tracked down and arrested.
“The mother had fled the area… before she was tracked down and arrested,” Birua added.
The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the motive behind the killing.
“Investigations are underway to ascertain the motive behind the killing,” police said, adding that the accused appeared to have no apparent mental health issues.
“She appeared to have no apparent mental health issues,” the officer noted.
