Coimbatore, Mar 16: Police in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore district have arrested three persons, including a juvenile, for allegedly murdering a migrant worker from Jharkhand near Kaniyur, officials said on Monday.
The victim, identified as Narayan Hembram (33), a native of West Singhbhum district, was working as a labourer at a private firm and residing near Kaniyur.
According to police, Hembram’s body was found on Sunday morning in a vacant plot at Poolaikadu in the Karumathampatti area with severe cut injuries on his jaw and left hand, indicating that he had been attacked with sharp weapons.
During the investigation, police arrested B. Chhota Lal, his brother B. Dinesh, and a juvenile, all natives of Jharkhand who had been residing at Ponnandampalayam near Kaniyur.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the victim had been drinking with a friend on Saturday night when an argument broke out with a group of men. Though they initially went their separate ways, the suspects allegedly followed Hembram and attacked him later at Poolakkadu.
“The victim had been drinking with a friend when an argument broke out with a few men, who are suspected to have followed and attacked him later that night,” police said.
Following the altercation, the Karumathampatti Police launched a search operation and apprehended the suspects near the Kaniyur toll gate on Monday when they were allegedly planning to flee back to Jharkhand.
“The suspects were apprehended near the Kaniyur toll gate while attempting to flee to Jharkhand,” police said.
The operation was carried out under the supervision of K. Karthikeyan, Superintendent of Police of Coimbatore district. Further investigation into the case is underway.
