World, Feb 27: A routine traffic slowdown in Derby turned into a life-altering incident when a driver, allegedly distracted by gambling apps on his phone, crashed into a line of stationary vehicles — leaving a pregnant woman in need of an emergency C-section.Authorities identified the driver as 30-year-old Jack Bentley. According to investigators, dashcam footage shows Bentley driving his Ford Focus along a dual carriageway before colliding at speed with a Nissan that had stopped behind backed-up traffic.Police said phone data recovered after the crash revealed Bentley had been actively using gambling applications for much of his two-hour journey. Investigators described his behavior as deeply reckless, noting that he appeared focused on his screen in the moments leading up to the collision. The force of the crash caused a chain reaction among several vehicles waiting in traffic.

Emergency responders arrived quickly, treating multiple people at the scene.Among the injured was a pregnant woman traveling in one of the impacted vehicles. Due to the severity of the situation, doctors later performed an emergency Caesarean section in order to safely deliver her baby. Medical officials have not released further details about the condition of the mother or child, but both required urgent care following the crash.Road safety advocates say the case highlights the growing dangers of distracted driving in the age of smartphones. While texting behind the wheel has long been condemned, experts warn that the rise of mobile gambling, video streaming, and other interactive apps adds another layer of risk.In the UK, using a handheld mobile phone while driving is illegal and can carry significant penalties, including fines, license points, and potential disqualification. In cases involving serious injury, drivers may also face criminal charges.

Police described the incident as entirely preventable, emphasizing that a moment’s distraction can have devastating consequences. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are expected to pursue legal action. For the families involved, however, the consequences extend far beyond the courtroom — serving as a sobering reminder of how quickly lives can change when attention shifts from the road to a screen.
