Water supply disrupted across Colombo suburbs after major pipeline failure

Margao, Jan 6: Residents in several parts of South Goa will face restricted water supply on January 7 and 8 as the Public Works Department (PWD) undertakes urgent maintenance and repair work at the 160 MLD water treatment plant at Xelpem in Sanguem taluka.

According to PWD sources, water supply will be affected in Sanguem, Quepem, Salcete and Mormugao talukas during the two-day period. The 160 MLD water treatment plant will function at 50 per cent capacity, leading to curtailed distribution in the affected areas.

Officials said the maintenance shutdown is scheduled on January 7 from 9 am to 7 pm, during which critical repair and inspection work will be carried out. The works include fixing leakages at multiple locations in Verna on the old cement pipeline and inspecting the clariflocculator of one of the water tanks after it is emptied.

Executive Engineer of the PWD, Shrikant Gaonkar, said the repair work is essential to ensure the smooth functioning of the system. He noted that while the work is planned over two days, there is a possibility of early completion. “If everything goes well, we may even be able to complete the work in a day,” he said.

The PWD has appealed to residents and consumers in the affected talukas to store adequate water in advance and cooperate with authorities during the maintenance period. Normal water supply is expected to resume once the repair works are completed.

The department said the temporary inconvenience is necessary to address persistent issues in the pipeline and improve the reliability of water supply in the region.
