Hyderabad, Jan 6: A 23-year-old Dalit house surgeon at the Government Medical College in Siddipet district of Telangana allegedly died by suicide after a senior resident doctor, who had earlier promised to marry her, later refused, citing caste differences, police said.
The incident occurred on January 3, when the woman reportedly self-injected a herbicide in the college hostel and fell unconscious. Her roommates immediately rushed her to a hospital in Siddipet, from where she was referred to a state-run hospital in Hyderabad. She succumbed during treatment in the early hours of January 4, officials said.
Based on a complaint lodged by the victim’s sister, the police registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The accused, a senior resident doctor at the same medical college, has been arrested, police added.
The deceased hailed from a poor family in Jogulamba-Gadwal district. She studied in a social welfare school before joining the MBBS course at the Government Medical College, Siddipet, in 2020. Police said she was known for her academic excellence and active participation in sports and games.
Her parents work as labourers, while her elder sister is employed as a software engineer. During her internship at the medical college, she came into contact with the accused in July last year, police said, adding that his subsequent refusal to marry allegedly led her to take the extreme step.
Further investigation is underway, police said.
