Dhaka, Dec 18: The Election Commission (EC) has ordered enhanced security at the offices of returning officers (ROs) and assistant returning officers (AROs) across the country ahead of the 13th national parliamentary election and the referendum scheduled for February 12.
In a directive issued on Wednesday, the commission instructed the deployment of an adequate number of police personnel at the concerned offices to safeguard sensitive election-related documents, materials and equipment during the election period.
The instructions were conveyed in a letter signed by EC Deputy Secretary Mohammad Monir Hossain and sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs, requesting necessary directives to ensure police deployment nationwide.
The commission noted that the election schedule was announced on December 11 and that gazette notifications appointing returning officers and assistant returning officers have already been issued. At present, there are 69 returning officers and around 500 assistant returning officers across the country.
Given the prevailing law and order situation, the EC said ensuring the security of election offices, as well as the safety of officials and employees, was essential as critical electoral documents and materials are stored at these locations.
In addition to field-level offices, the commission has sought enhanced security arrangements for the chief election commissioner, including an additional escort vehicle during the election period. Round-the-clock security has also been requested for the four election commissioners and the senior secretary, including during travel to and from their residences and offices.
Security has already been reinforced at the Nirbachan Bhaban in Agargaon, as well as at district, upazila and thana-level election offices nationwide.
According to the announced schedule, the deadline for submitting nomination papers is December 29, while scrutiny of nominations will take place from December 30 to January 4. The final list of candidates and symbol allocation will be published on January 21, and election campaigning will continue until 7:30am on February 10.
The 13th national parliamentary election and the referendum are scheduled to be held on February 12.
