Public urged to remain vigilant as landslide risk rises in central highlands

Colombo, Dec 18: The National Building Research Organization (NBRO) on Wednesday urged the public to exercise heightened caution as the risk of landslides increases in several parts of the Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts following heavy rainfall.

According to NBRO officials, more than 200 millimetres of rain have been recorded in landslide-prone areas over recent days, significantly raising the possibility of slope failures. Early warning signs, including ground movement and visible cracks, have already been observed in multiple locations.

In response to the prevailing weather conditions, the NBRO has issued landslide evacuation Red Notices for eight Divisional Secretariat Divisions across the two districts. In Kandy District, the affected areas include Doluwa, Udadumbara, Madadumbara, and Minipe, while Walapane, Hanguranketha, Nildandahinna, and Mathurata in Nuwara Eliya District have also been placed under warning.

NBRO Geologist Wasantha Senadheera advised residents in high-risk zones to avoid unnecessary travel and take immediate steps to ensure their safety. He further urged the public to stay away from houses, buildings, and areas where cracks have appeared, stressing that such signs could indicate imminent landslides.

Authorities have called on communities in vulnerable areas to remain alert and strictly follow evacuation instructions issued by disaster management officials as adverse weather conditions continue.
