Colombo, Dec 18: The Central Cultural Fund (CCF) has warned of a potential landslide threat in the vicinity of the Nine-Arch Railway Bridge in Modara following adverse weather conditions triggered by Cyclone Ditwa.
According to the CCF, several buildings in the area have sustained damage, disrupting construction activities linked to the development of a new tourist zone around the historic railway bridge. The weather-related impact has caused delays to the project, which was initially scheduled for completion this year.
The tourism development initiative includes the electrification of the Nine-Arch Railway Bridge and the creation of supporting infrastructure, with an estimated investment of around Rs. 300 million.
Despite the setback, authorities have ruled out any suspension of the project. Dr. Nilan Cooray, Director General of the Central Cultural Fund, said the government remains committed to completing the development and is taking steps to expedite work once conditions stabilize.
Officials expect the tourist zone to be opened to visitors next year, subject to safety assessments and restoration work in the affected areas.
