Finland, Mar 20: Finland has retained its position as the world’s happiest country in the latest World Happiness Report 2026, while India has been ranked 116th, reflecting persistent challenges related to quality of life and social support systems.

The annual report, which assesses global happiness levels based on factors such as income, health, social support, freedom, generosity and perceptions of corruption, continues to see Nordic nations dominate the top rankings.

Finland’s consistent performance has been attributed to high levels of social trust, strong public institutions and comprehensive welfare measures.

Citizens benefit from universal healthcare, quality education and policies that promote equality and well-being.Experts note that the country’s success is not solely linked to economic prosperity but also to non-material factors such as work-life balance, environmental quality and community cohesion.

Other Nordic countries, including Denmark, Iceland and Sweden, also feature prominently among the top-ranked nations, reinforcing the region’s reputation for high living standards and social stability.

India’s ranking at 116 highlights ongoing structural challenges despite its rapid economic growth. Analysts point to issues such as income disparity, unemployment and uneven access to healthcare and education as key factors influencing overall well-being.

The report underscores that economic expansion alone may not translate into higher happiness levels unless accompanied by inclusive development and stronger social safety nets.

The findings have sparked discussions among policymakers and experts on the need to prioritise public health, education, employment generation and social trust to improve overall life satisfaction.

The World Happiness Report is released annually and is widely used as a benchmark for assessing well-being and quality of life across countries.
