Beijing, Dec 30: China has introduced the world’s fastest high-speed train prototype, the CR450, which reached a record test speed of 450 km/h, surpassing the existing CR400 Fuxing, which operates at 350 km/h, state media reported.
The unveiling of the CR450 marks a significant milestone in high-speed rail (HSR) technology. The train sets new international benchmarks in operational speed, energy efficiency, interior noise reduction, and braking distance, according to the China State Railway Group Co (China Railway).
“China Railway will arrange a series of line tests for the prototypes and optimise technical indicators to ensure the CR450 enters commercial service as soon as possible,” the company said in a statement.
China’s operational HSR tracks currently span 47,000 kilometers, connecting major cities and underpinning the country’s transportation infrastructure. While not all routes are profitable, the network has played a vital role in reducing travel times and spurring industrial development along railway corridors.
The Beijing-Shanghai line is among the most successful, generating substantial revenue, while other city networks face financial challenges.
China has also extended its expertise beyond its borders, exporting high-speed rail technology to countries such as Thailand, Indonesia, and Serbia, where it developed the Belgrade-Novi Sad HSR.
Though not all routes are financially viable, the HSR network has been pivotal in bolstering China’s economy. “The high-speed rail network has played a crucial role in the nation’s economic and social development, reducing travel times and boosting industrial development along railway routes,” the company noted.
As China continues to optimize the CR450 for commercial use, the country reaffirms its global leadership in high-speed rail technology, setting a new standard for speed, efficiency, and innovation.
