Dhaka, Jan 10: The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Thursday issued a firm warning to its rebel candidates, urging them to withdraw their nomination papers within the official deadline or face organisational measures.
BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan said the party leadership remains hopeful that internal discipline will be restored before the withdrawal period expires. He noted that several rebel candidates have already communicated their intention to step aside, signalling what he described as a “positive trend” toward unity.
Speaking to reporters after inaugurating a photo exhibition on late BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Nazrul said the party had clearly instructed dissenting candidates to respect collective decisions taken by the leadership.
The senior BNP leader also reaffirmed the party’s confidence in Tarique Rahman, describing him as the political heir to Khaleda Zia’s legacy. According to Nazrul, public expectations are closely tied to Tarique Rahman’s leadership, with many hoping for meaningful political and democratic reforms under his guidance.
On the overall election environment, Nazrul stressed that maintaining law and order is essential to ensure a credible and fair electoral process. He urged the authorities to remain vigilant, warning that certain groups may attempt to create instability to derail democratic progress.
“There are forces that do not want an election or a democratic transition,” he said, adding that proactive steps by the government would be crucial in safeguarding stability during the election period.
Responding to a question on BNP’s election manifesto, Nazrul confirmed that a dedicated committee is currently working on the document and that it will be unveiled soon.
The photo exhibition was organised by the Bogura Media and Cultural Society (BMCS), a platform of journalists and cultural activists based in Dhaka. Nazrul toured the exhibition venue and praised the initiative for highlighting Khaleda Zia’s political life and contributions.
