Jamshedpur, July 27: Tata Steel has announced plans to invest ₹10,000 crore in Jharkhand by 2028 to expand its steelmaking capacity, strengthen low-carbon manufacturing technologies and generate around 2,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities, the company said.

The proposed investment forms part of Tata Steel’s long-term strategy to increase its steelmaking capacity in India from the current 27.35 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 40 MTPA, with an eventual target of exceeding 50 MTPA.

According to the company, ₹7,000 crore of the proposed investment will be allocated to the HIsarna and Easy Melting Technology (EMT) projects, while ₹2,600 crore will be invested in expanding the Tinplate Division and ₹1,500 crore will be spent on the Combi Mill.

“Tata Steel is committed to invest ₹10,000 crore in its Jharkhand projects, including ₹7,000 crore in HIsarna & Easy Melting Technology by 2028. In total, the investment will create 2,000 direct and indirect jobs,” a Tata Steel official said.

A key component of the investment is the deployment of HIsarna, Tata Steel’s patented low-carbon iron-making technology. The process produces iron without requiring coke, sinter or pellet plants, reducing production costs and carbon emissions. The company said the technology can utilise coking coal available in India, reducing dependence on imported raw materials, while emitting nearly 20 per cent less carbon dioxide than the conventional blast furnace process.

The company plans to establish a one-million-tonne pilot HIsarna plant within the existing Jamshedpur ecosystem. The hot metal produced at the facility will be utilised in the Jamshedpur steel melt shops, and the engineering study for the project has already commenced.

“The technology has been operating successfully at our Netherlands site for the last 10 years, producing 60,000 tonnes per annum, which validates its scalability,” the official said.

“A one-million-tonne pilot plant is planned within the existing Jamshedpur ecosystem to leverage available infrastructure, and the hot metal produced will be used in the Jamshedpur steel melt shops. The engineering study for this project has commenced,” the official added.

Tata Steel currently has a consolidated steelmaking capacity of more than 36 MTPA across India, the Netherlands and Thailand, excluding its UK operations, which are under transition. The company plans to add over 12 MTPA of steelmaking capacity in India as part of its long-term expansion strategy.

Officials said the investment is expected to strengthen Jharkhand’s industrial ecosystem, support cleaner steel production and contribute to India’s transition towards sustainable manufacturing while creating new employment opportunities in the state.
