Jharkhand police intensify anti-naxal operations, 103 arrested

Ranchi, August 15: Jharkhand Police has reported significant progress in its operations against Maoist insurgency, with 103 Naxalites arrested and 46 others surrendering since January, Director General of Police Tadasha Mishra said on Saturday.

Addressing an Independence Day programme at the state police headquarters in Ranchi, Mishra said 22 Naxalites had also been killed in encounters during the period up to August 5.She said sustained operations and a coordinated security strategy had helped reduce the Maoist challenge in the state.

According to the DGP, security forces recovered 98 firearms, 7,470 rounds of ammunition, around 11 kg of explosives and three improvised explosive devices during the operations. Police also seized about Rs 6 lakh allegedly linked to extortion activities.Mishra highlighted the arrest of CPI (Maoist) Politburo member Misir Besra, who carried a reward of Rs 1 crore.

She also said Patiram Manjhi, described as a Central Committee member of the banned outfit, was killed in a police encounter.The DGP said the police would continue to maintain a zero-tolerance approach towards organised crime.Between January and July, police arrested 193 alleged members of criminal gangs and seized 63 weapons from them, she said.

Mishra also underlined efforts to tackle emerging security challenges, including cybercrime and illegal drug trafficking. She said the police were pursuing sustained measures to prevent such activities and strengthen public security.The figures were presented as part of the police department’s assessment of its security operations during the current year.The DGP credited the results to sustained field operations, professional planning and coordinated efforts by the police and other security personnel.
