Ranchi, Sept 24: Jharkhand Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar on Thursday said the large number of women among the gold medallists at Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University reflects the growing participation of women in higher education and professional fields.
Addressing the university’s third convocation ceremony in Ranchi, Gangwar congratulated the students who received degrees and medals and noted that 93 of the 142 gold medallists were women.
He said women are increasingly making their presence felt across fields including education, science, administration, medicine, technology and sports, and encouraged students to recognise their abilities, remain confident and strive for higher standards of excellence.
Recalling the contribution of Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, after whom the university is named, the Governor described him as an educationist and public figure who devoted his life to education, public service and national unity.
Gangwar urged graduating students to uphold the reputation of their institution through their conduct and work. He said being associated with a university named after Mukherjee also carries a responsibility to value knowledge, courage, reason and a sense of duty.
Referring to India’s long educational tradition, the Governor cited the principle “Vidya Dadati Vinayam”, saying that knowledge should be accompanied by humility, wisdom and values.
He also referred to ancient centres of learning such as Nalanda as examples of India’s contribution to global knowledge.He said education should not be limited to accumulating information but should encourage critical thinking, dialogue and the continuous pursuit of truth.
Gangwar asked the graduating students to apply the knowledge and perspective gained at the university for constructive purposes in their personal lives and society.
He also highlighted the rapid changes being brought by artificial intelligence, digital technology, biotechnology, space science and automation. He said young people should not remain merely consumers of technology but should develop the ability to use and contribute to technology creatively.
At the same time, he stressed that technological development should remain connected with human sensitivity, ethical values and social responsibility.The Governor also encouraged students to look beyond conventional employment and develop an entrepreneurial mindset wherever possible.
He said knowledge, skills, innovation and entrepreneurship can help create new employment opportunities.Referring to the national goal of Viksit Bharat@2047, Gangwar said young people graduating from universities today would have an important role in shaping the country’s future.He urged students to combine their personal ambitions with a commitment to social development and national progress.
Concluding his address, the Governor advised the graduates to remain humble after achieving success and maintain patience while facing difficulties. He said students should not only reflect on what they have achieved in life but also ask themselves what they have contributed to society.
