NEW DELHI, Sep 23: Public sector banks and regional rural banks will remain open on Sunday, September 27, to facilitate customer transactions ahead of a proposed three-day nationwide bank strike from September 28 to 30, the government said.
The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), which represents a large section of bank employees, has called the strike over several demands, including the implementation of a five-day banking week.
The proposed industrial action would also coincide with the half-yearly closing of the banking sector, potentially affecting routine banking operations.
“In view of the proposed nationwide bank strike by the United Forum of Bank Unions from September 28 to 30, 2026, all Public Sector Banks and Regional Rural Banks will function normally on Sunday, September 27, 2026,” the government said in a statement.
The Reserve Bank of India has permitted bank branches, offices, ATM-linked branches and currency chests to remain fully operational on September 27, it said.
The move is aimed at ensuring that customers’ banking requirements are addressed before the proposed strike and that essential financial services remain available.
The Department of Financial Services under the Ministry of Finance said the welfare and convenience of bank customers remained a key priority.
The government and bank managements have appealed to the unions to reconsider and defer the proposed strike. Authorities have also taken measures to minimise disruption to essential banking services during the period, according to the statement.
Bank customers have been advised to complete important transactions in advance of the proposed strike dates to avoid possible inconvenience.
The UFBU has listed the demand for a five-day banking week among its key issues, along with other demands concerning the banking workforce.
