Ranchi, Sep 21: The Jharkhand Congress on Monday demanded the resignation of Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary following an alleged incident involving the harassment of a young man and woman in Jamui district.
The party criticised the law-and-order situation in Bihar after a video purportedly showing the two being harassed by a group of people surfaced on social media and drew widespread attention.
Jharkhand Congress media in-charge Rakesh Sinha said the state government should be held accountable if people were able to allegedly stop and mistreat a woman in a public place. He called upon the Bihar Chief Minister to take responsibility for the situation.
The Congress also demanded that the investigation be completed within a fixed timeframe and that strict legal action be taken against everyone found to have been involved.Jamui Superintendent of Police Bishwajeet Dayal said the incident took place on the evening of September 19.
Police arrested three people on Monday, while efforts were continuing to trace other alleged participants.A Special Investigation Team headed by a woman police officer has been formed and is conducting raids as part of the investigation, the SP said.The video circulated on social media has prompted criticism from political leaders and members of the public.
However, the authenticity of the video and the complete circumstances surrounding it had not been independently verified at the time of the report.
The Congress’s demand for the Chief Minister’s resignation comes amid its criticism of the Bihar government’s handling of law-and-order issues. The police investigation into the alleged incident is continuing.
