Ranchi, Aug 25: Tata Steel has secured interim protection from enforcement action in a dispute involving a ₹1,755.10 crore demand raised by the Jharkhand government over alleged excess coal extraction at its West Bokaro Colliery, officials said.The case relates to coal mining activities carried out between financial years 2000-01 and 2006-07.
The District Mining Office (DMO), Ramgarh, issued a demand notice on March 30, 2026, alleging that Tata Steel had extracted around 1.62 crore metric tonnes of coal beyond the permissible limit during the seven-year period.Tata Steel received the notice on April 3 and subsequently challenged the demand, maintaining that it lacked adequate legal and factual basis.
The company filed a revision application before the Revisional Authority under the Ministry of Coal on April 24, seeking a review of the demand.
The authority heard the matter on August 20 and has now admitted Tata Steel’s application for consideration, according to the company’s regulatory filing.As part of the interim order, the Jharkhand authorities have been directed not to take coercive steps against Tata Steel in connection with the disputed demand while the revision proceedings remain pending.
The respondents in the proceedings include the Jharkhand government’s Department of Mines and Geology, represented by its secretary, and the District Mining Officer, Ramgarh.
The demand is based on grounds similar to those considered by the Supreme Court in the Common Cause versus Union of India matter concerning mining-related issues.Tata Steel has contested the applicability and basis of the demand in its case.The latest order does not cancel or finally decide the ₹1,755.10 crore demand.
It only provides temporary protection to the company while its revision application is examined by the competent authority.The final outcome will depend on the examination of the company’s submissions and the position taken by the Jharkhand authorities during the proceedings.
The dispute is significant because it involves a substantial financial claim and relates to regulatory compliance in coal mining operations in Jharkhand.
